From Glassblowing to Sailing: A Midsummer Look at FLX U's Enrichment Program
We are officially halfway through our 2026 Summer Enrichment Program, and what an incredible journey it has been! Looking back over the first four weeks, we’re overwhelmed with gratitude for our members, families, partners, and community supporters who have helped make this summer unforgettable.
Each week has been intentionally designed to challenge our youth to step outside of their comfort zones, discover new passions, build meaningful relationships, and grow into more confident versions of themselves. Here’s a look back at everything we’ve accomplished together!
Week 1: Fine Arts Camp
Our summer kicked off by unleashing creativity! Members explored drawing, painting, sculpture, and other hands-on art experiences while learning that there is no “right” way to create. They practiced patience, self-expression, and confidence by trying new artistic techniques and encouraging one another throughout the week.
The highlight was our field trip to the Corning Museum of Glass, where members watched live glass-blowing demonstrations and discovered how imagination can be transformed into beautiful works of art. Many who were hesitant to call themselves “artists” left the week proudly showing off creations they never imagined they could make.
Growth: Creativity, confidence, perseverance, and learning to embrace mistakes as part of the creative process.
Week 2: Young Entrepreneur
Academy
During our entrepreneurship week, members transformed ideas into brands! Thanks to our partnership with TH!NK Geneva, they learned about business ownership, marketing, fashion design, branding, and product development.
Throughout the week, members designed apparel, developed personal brands, pitched their ideas, and discovered what it takes to turn creativity into opportunity. They learned that entrepreneurship is about much more than making money; it’s about solving problems, serving others, and believing in yourself.
Growth: Leadership, public speaking, teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, and entrepreneurial thinking.
Week 3: CHAMP Camp
Week three challenged everyone mentally and physically through our partnership with Hwa Rang Kwan Taekwondo. Members learned punches, kicks, blocks, balance, discipline, respect, and self-control while encouraging one another through every challenge.
Many participants walked in unsure of themselves but finished the week breaking through personal barriers and celebrating accomplishments they didn’t think were possible. The lessons extended far beyond martial arts, teaching resilience, confidence, and the importance of perseverance.
Growth: Self-discipline, confidence, resilience, respect, emotional regulation, and physical wellness.
Week 4: Sailing Camp
This week has truly been one for the books! Through our partnership with the Seneca Sailing Academy, our members stepped completely outside their comfort zones by learning the fundamentals of sailing on Seneca Lake.
They’ve learned boating safety, teamwork, knot tying, navigation, communication, and responsibility while spending time on the water. Watching our youth overcome fear, trust one another, and celebrate each new accomplishment has been inspiring. Many had never stepped foot on a sailboat before this week, and now they’re confidently helping steer, rig, and work together as a crew.
The experience has reminded all of us that growth happens when we’re willing to try something new.
Growth: Courage, communication, teamwork, trust, responsibility, adaptability, and confidence.
Halfway Reflection
In just four weeks, our members have become artists, entrepreneurs, martial artists, and sailors. More importantly, they’ve become stronger leaders, kinder teammates, better communicators, and more confident young people.
We’ve watched friendships grow, comfort zones expand, laughter fill every room, and confidence shine brighter each day. Every challenge has become an opportunity, every activity has sparked curiosity, and every week has reinforced our belief that exposing young people to new experiences truly changes lives.
A heartfelt thank you to our incredible community partners, families, volunteers, and supporters who continue to invest in our youth. None of this would be possible without you.
And we’re just getting started! We can’t wait to see what the second half of the summer has in store.
