Youth Court Members Get a Real Taste of the Courtroom
Last week, Ontario County Youth Court’s newest members got one of their first real looks at what it means to show up in a courtroom.
Youth Court-in-training members gathered at the Canandaigua Town Court for a mock trial, a hands-on learning experience where participants take on real courtroom roles and practice actual court procedures in a supportive, guided environment. It’s one thing to learn about the justice system in a classroom. It’s another to be a part of it.
Leading the way were Youth Court’s most experienced members and steering committee volunteers, who facilitated the trial by demonstrating how a case is run from start to finish and walking newer members through each step themselves.
In addition to running a full trial simulation, participants covered key topics including courtroom roles, code of conduct, and confidentiality, the foundational elements that make Youth Court a program built on trust and accountability.
“Throughout the activity, the youth had a great time engaging with one another, building confidence, and developing a better understanding of the Youth Court system,” said Amelia Baker, Youth Court Program Coordinator. “It was exciting to see their participation, teamwork, and learning grow throughout the experience!”
Ontario County Youth Court is a peer-based restorative justice program where young people take on real roles—judge, juror, prosecutor, defense, bailiff—in actual non-violent cases involving their peers.
