From Simulation to Real-Life Impact: STOP DWI Engages EPIC Zone Youth

Stacking cups and walking a straight line might seem simple, until you’re wearing “drunk goggles.” During a recent STOP DWI presentation at EPIC Zone Bloomfield, youth ages 12 to 15 experienced firsthand how impaired driving affects judgment and coordination, leaving a lasting impression about the importance of making safe choices.

The goggles, known as vision impairment simulation goggles, allowed members to safely experience the physical effects of being under the influence. The New York State STOP-DWI Program provides local initiatives aimed at reducing alcohol- and drug-related driving injuries and fatalities. Presenter Molly McNear shared powerful stories of individuals who have lost loved ones to impaired driving and now dedicate their lives to education and prevention, as well as stories of those whose own choices permanently affected their lives and communities.

The session took on an intimate, conversational tone, with participants asking questions and reflecting on the serious legal and personal consequences of impaired driving.

“Members expressed an understanding of the severity of choosing to drink and drive,” said Cora Woloson, EPIC Zone Bloomfield program coordinator. “Some mentioned friends that use alcohol and drugs and how our members agreed that drug use and drinking alcohol aren’t smart choices period and that to do it while driving was clearly puts all people in danger.”

Programs like this show how EPIC Zone Bloomfield continues to provide meaningful opportunities for youth to grow and make safe, informed choices.
