Ontario County Youth Survey Reveals Declines in Substance Use but Ongoing Mental Health and Safety Concerns

Results from the 2025 Evalumetrics Youth Survey reveal both encouraging trends and critical areas of concern among Ontario County youth. This year, 1,136 students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 participated in the survey, which tracks youth attitudes and behaviors around substance use, mental health, and well-being. The data show that alcohol and marijuana remain the most commonly used substances, though overall use continues to decline. At the same time, the survey highlights growing challenges related to mental health, with more than one in three students reporting persistent feelings of sadness or depression, and one in seven indicating thoughts of suicide. Other findings point to issues such as chronic absenteeism, food insecurity, and lack of sleep—factors that can all affect a young person’s ability to thrive.
